Preparing for a Co-op Board Interview

Understand the building's process and prepare to discuss your submitted application accurately.

Prepare for a co-op board conversation by understanding your submitted application and gathering your own practical questions. Confirm the building’s process with your agent or management contact.

Before the meeting Ask about the format, expected participants, scheduling, accessibility accommodations, and any materials you should have available. Review the exact version of your submitted application so you can answer accurately.

During the conversation Respond honestly and clearly. If you do not know an answer, say you will verify it. Do not make commitments you do not understand or describe plans that differ from your actual intentions.

Questions to prepare Consider asking where to find written information about move scheduling, building communications, renovations, maintenance requests, and day-to-day procedures. Ask your team which questions belong with management rather than the interview.

Fair housing matters Housing discrimination is prohibited in New York City, including in the sale of cooperative homes. An interview is not an exemption from fair housing protections. If a question or experience raises concerns, document what happened and discuss it with a qualified attorney or the NYC Commission on Human Rights.

After the meeting Ask your designated contact how an outcome will be communicated and whether any follow-up is needed. Avoid assuming that a courteous conversation establishes approval.

Your next step: review your application and prepare a short list of factual questions.
